Member communication key for new IBAM president

Increasing membership communication is among the Insurance Brokers Association of Manitoba's initiatives in 2017 under the leadership of president Darren Peters.

IBAM's annual convention was held late last month in Winnipeg and Mr. Peters, claims advocate at Guild HMS Group, took over the reins as president during the convention.

Mr. Peters told Thompson's he would focus on "grassroots involvement from membership on carrying out our 2015 strategic plan initiatives and leaving IBAM in a better place than it was before from a structural standpoint."

Under its 2015 strategic plan IBAM expected to maintain political advocacy, form new partnerships and reinforce old ones, increase the Manitoba brokers' profile, provide professional education to brokers and their employees and be the industry voice for brokers in the province.

"I think IBAM's profile under (ceo) Dave Schioler grew rapidly thanks in large part to his efforts as well as the boards he worked under," Mr. Peters said.

Last month Mr. Schioler announced he would retire from IBAM in 2018.

In 2017, Mr. Peters and the board will also be preparing for its upcoming contract negotiations with Manitoba Public Insurance.

"(We will) ensure that membership is heard on their views as it relates to this upcoming negotiation," Mr. Peters said.

He also expects to address fast-paced technological changes during his tenure as president.

"The rapidly changing technology landscape (is) both a challenge and an opportunity (and) IBAM will be doing its utmost to arm brokers with the tools they need to demonstrate to consumers that brokers remain the number one choice for expert advice."

Speakers at the convention included former Quebec premier Jean Charest. Broadcast journalist Ben Mulroney moderated the insurance executive panels.

Mr. Peters said 3,500 delegates attended the convention, 200 more than last year.
