Auto Broker Technical Course w/ IWS Certification

When selling insurance, excellent customer service is essential, and brokers require more knowledge and expertise than ever before. This program was developed to give new brokers the skills needed to provide a high level of expertise to their auto clients. The Auto Broker Technical Course is an approved pre-licensing course, and successful completion satisfies the education requirement for a Auto-Only License.

Phase 1 - Auto Broker Technical Course

There are two ways to take the Auto Broker Technical Course: either through our 4 Day Immersion Course or through a Self-Directed Course option. 

ABOUT THE IMMERSION COURSE

Course Cost and Structure - 4 Day Immersion 

Phase 1 only - $425.00

Phase 1 and 3 (includes MPI/IWS Course) - $650.00

This course includes four days of overview with a teacher (online or in-person) on auto insurance (focusing on the history, terminology and basics of this area of the business), the Insurance Council of Manitoba and customer service training. 

The course runs Monday to Thursday with an exam written on the Friday afternoon. Students attaining a grade of 60% or higher will move on to the next phase of the program.

ABOUT THE SELF-DIRECTED COURSE

Phase 1 only - $250.00

An individual can register for the self-directed Auto Broker Technical Course at any time. Once registered, the individual will have up to 6 months to write the exam. Individuals must register for their exam a minimum of one week before the exam date. If the individual does not register for an exam within the 6 month timeframe, they must pay a rewrite fee.

* Note - Completion of Phase 1 only does not qualify an individual to sell insurance in Manitoba. Students must also complete Phase 2 and 3 (IWS and MPI Training).

ABOUT THE EXAM

Exams can be written at the IBAM Office (Exam Sitting) or online via CAPTUS (see upcoming exam sittings and how to register for an exam on CAPTUS here).

Exam Details:

• 30 multiple choice questions
• 1 ½ hours to complete the exam
• Pass mark: 60%
• If required, exam rewrite fee is $90   

After successful completion of the Auto Broker Technical Course, students move on to Phase 2 & 3.

Phase 2 - IWS Tutorial

This phase includes eighty (80) hours of supervised training in a brokerage. This includes IWS computer assisted instruction (tutorial) that leads students through a variety of Autopac transactions, screen by screen. Students who are not employed at a brokerage already must secure their own placement at a brokerage to be able to take this phase of the course.

Phase 3 - MPI Training

This phase includes three (3) days of MPI Basic Auto Training, in (virtual or in person) classroom with a teacher. At completion, students will challenge the MPI Basic Auto Training test and successful completion meets the education requirement for a Level Restricted Auto-Only License.

Upon Completion: Students successfully completing and passing the open book MPI Autopac exam will now be a certified Autopac agent. As long as all ICM requirements are fulfilled and the employee has an insurance license, they are now able to begin assisting customers in an Autopac capacity.

* Note - Completion of Phase 3 only does not qualify an individual to sell insurance in Manitoba unless you have Auto Broker or your Level 1 License.
