Over the years, Rempel Insurance has stayed true to a few big principles that guide everything they do. They have always believed in offering personal service – taking the time to get to know clients and making sure they feel looked after. Also, to give back, not just to the industry by sharing what they’ve learned, but also to the communities they live and work in. Inside the office, Rempel’s strong team connection extends beyond work. Altogether, it’s a mix of client care, industry involvement, team closeness, and community support that has shaped Rempel as a company.
Rempel Insurance was founded in 1965 by Henry Rempel to meet the needs of the Morris community. When Dale and Lynn Rempel purchased the company in 1990, they not only renamed it but also broadened its scope to include farm, crop, and agribusiness coverage. Their deep understanding of the transportation sector and dedication to exceptional service helped the company become a trusted partner in that industry.
Under Dale and Lynn’s leadership, Rempel Insurance grew from a two-person operation to a team of 12. As the business expanded, it reached beyond Morris, meeting clients where they were instead of waiting for them to visit the office.
In 2012, after Dale’s passing, the team rallied together with a plan to ensure the company could continue at full capacity. That period of hardship solidified the team's strength and resilience, shaping a culture of collaboration and perseverance in the face of any challenge. Lynn stepped in as President and CEO, working closely with the team to continue operations, while Shawn – who had worked alongside Dale primarily serving transportation clients – continued to build strong client relationships and drive growth.
In 2018, Shawn and Janice Graydon purchased Rempel Insurance, marking another phase of expansion. Since then, the team has grown substantially in both premium and team size, increasing from 13 people to 30. Today, Shawn serves as Chief Growth Officer, focusing on his strengths with clients, while Janice, as CEO, oversees the overall performance and well-being of the company and its team.
Looking ahead, Shawn and Janice are focusing on setting up the company to sustain its next phase of growth, knowing it starts with the right team to make it possible, one that’s not only capable of meeting the challenges of the future but energized to carry the culture of resilience, service, and client care into the future.
Rempel Insurance is still proudly rooted in Morris, Manitoba, with its team working out of two buildings side by side and a mix of in-office and hybrid members. Most work is commercial, about 80%, with the other 20% in personal lines. Over the years, they have developed strong specialties in transportation and agribusiness, and those industries have become a big part of who they are. Rempel takes pride in being actively involved in those sectors, getting to know clients, what matters to them, and how best to protect them. As the business keeps growing into new industries and niches, a lot of that direction will come from the natural talents and interests of the team. Today, Rempel is licensed and serving clients across much of Canada, from BC through Ontario.
Rempel Insurance was truly humbled to be selected as the very first recipient of IBAM’s Community Champion Award. Community commitment has always been part of who Rempel is, not just in its hometown of Morris, but in many of the communities it does business in. Volunteerism is something they value at every level of the organization. Its people give their time and energy in many ways – whether through service to the insurance industry, like past and present leaders serving on the IBAM Board (with Shawn serving as President next year), or through involvement in the industries they specialize in, or directly through local communities. At Rempel Insurance, volunteerism isn’t just encouraged, it’s supported, recognized, and celebrated.
Looking ahead, Rempel’s focus is on growing thoughtfully; prioritizing quality over speed to make sure the right capacity and capability are in place for the next phase of growth. Rempel is committed to deepening its expertise in the niches it already serves, while also expanding into new ones as opportunities arise. With both Morris office buildings nearing full capacity, one of the next steps will be opening an office in Winnipeg. Through it all, growth will continue to be driven by relationships and providing real value to clients that goes beyond the policy itself.
To celebrate 60 years, Rempel acknowledges ways that really matter to its team, because they’re the core of the company. Internally, they plan to celebrate the milestone together in a way that feels meaningful. Once the new team room and main boardroom renovations are completed, Rempel plans to host an open house at its office to celebrate with stakeholders. Milestones like this are important, not just as a company achievement, but as a chance to bring together everyone who has been part of the story. In addition, Rempel will be launching a 60 Acts of Kindness campaign, where the team will carry out 60 simple but meaningful acts in the industry, community, and industries it serves. It’s Rempel’s way of showing gratitude, giving back, and living out the style and values that define Rempel Insurance.
